The Seeker: The Life Story of Shinran Shonin, Part 1 provides a vivid description of the young days of Shinran Shōnin (1173–1263), a Buddhist teacher deeply revered as the founder of Jōdo Shinshū (Shin Buddhism), spanning from his childhood to his early thirties. It depicts his childhood difficulties, his struggles for true enlightenment in the traditional Buddhist path, the first meeting with his lifetime partner, Eshin, and the life-changing encounter with his teacher, Hōnen Shōnin. The book is the English version of the graphic novel Manga Shūso Shinran Shonin, Volume 1, which was originally published in Japanese by the Higashi Honganji (Shinshū Ōtani-ha) Nanba Betsuin in Osaka, Japan.
